IRC
Introduction
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a simple, broadly used chat protocol. We will use it throughout the quarter to easily share bits of code and ideas. The goal is to be able to quickly communicate with other students in the class whenever you have questions or comments.
Setting Up IRC
The multi-protocol IM client, Pidgin, comes installed by default on Ubuntu. We will use this for IRC communication. It is also available in the Wilkinson Lab and TLab. Here are the steps to set it up:
- Launch Pidgin

Add
to add a new account -
Choose
IRC
as the protocol - Choose a screen name (your first or last name would be a logical choice)

Enter
irc.ubuntu.com
as the server -
Press
Save

Press
Close
and go to yourBuddy List

Choose
Buddies
from the menu and thenAdd Chat

Enter
#NorthwesternNetsec
(note the#
sign at the beginning) -
Choose
Autojoin when account becomes online

Press
Add
-
Double click
#NorthwesternNetsec
in your buddy list
